I've just played this a couple of times through and it's a great album,
anyone scrolling through /r/Vaporwave
ought to give this a look-in.
To leave a bit of a review:
The album beings with ゆ Turn み On. A strong vaporwave opening with a droning
sample that echoes the booting up of a PS1 or an old Mac. On top of this audio is a
drum beat and hihat which brings certain witch-house and even synthwave elements to it.
A little noise that indicates this album doesn't hold the vaporwave genre's hand throughout.
It will become apparent through listening that Wet Phone Anxiety really blends in and out
of vaporwave and its neighboring genres. Tracks like Profound Jaunt, Yours and mine and
the outro of Opportunity appear to have Synthwave and new retrowave flavors. While Dance
with me, Serenity Now and I Miss Harambe Memes have elements of early 2000's IDM producers,
Boards of Canada and AFX
It's clear that the tracks have been meticulously put together. There are plenty of amateur
vaporwave artists who reduce the genre to slowing down pop songs in an attempt to release the
next Macintosh Plus 420. The hallmark of a good vaporwave album is using samples in a way that
redefines the context they were originally intended for, which I think
Professor Daytime has done perfectly.
I think my favorite track on the album is Opportunity. It's a very dream-like piece
that uses vocal samples in a way that sounds like Pogo on Valium. The hihat also likes
to come in and out, adjusting the dynamic of a song as it does. I'm also a huge fan of Yours
and Mine I think it's the most synthwave track on the album, and it's great to see the
genre appear in context of a vaporwave album. The vocoder effect on top of the keys and
drums certainly reminds me of Daft Punk's discovery album. Also Special shout out to
Castle Solitaire and Serenity Now
A great album. Subscribed.
